From mining the blocks to reading the signal
The path from a gaming-PC miner in 2012 to Boxmining in 2017—and the investment lens that grew out of explaining crypto in public.
Box Ventures did not begin with a fund deck. It began with a noisy gaming PC.
Michael Gu started mining Bitcoin in 2012, when the software, the community, and the market were all much smaller. The experience was technical, but the lasting lesson was human: in a new market, bad information can be more expensive than bad code.
Learning where people could see it
Boxmining started in 2017 as a way to learn in public and help other people understand digital assets. The work meant testing products, interviewing builders, following failures, and translating the gaps between what a project promised and what a user could actually do.
Following a global market added another layer. Important trends often appeared at different speeds across regions, communities, and trading venues. Explaining the industry meant moving between those contexts rather than treating crypto as a single conversation.
Over time, publishing created an unusual investment lens. Audience questions revealed where products were confusing. Tutorials exposed where infrastructure was brittle. Interviews made it easier to tell a rehearsed narrative from a team that understood the hard parts.
What carried into investing
The venture work grew from that habit of observation. We look for teams solving a real constraint, products that can be explained without empty vocabulary, and infrastructure whose value increases as the rest of the market becomes more useful.
Content does not make an investment correct. An audience is not a substitute for diligence. Proximity can sharpen judgment and distort it; readers should know when we have a stake.
But years spent explaining crypto do create a useful discipline: if we cannot say what a product does, who needs it, and what must go right, we are not ready to write the memo—let alone the cheque.
